A patchwork horror typeface sewn from layers · v1.000
Ragstitch is a patchwork horror typeface for Halloween games, scarecrow stories and anything sewn together after dark. Every letter is pieced from its own scraps of fabric and held together with seams and whipstitches, in layers you can colour one by one.
Type tester
All five layers are stacked here in the Harvest colours, with the burlap and plaid finish from the marketing art. Pick another recipe, switch Effects off for the plain layers, or the layers off for Solid. Lowercase keys type small capitals.

Features
A patchwork horror display family for Halloween and harvest games: five layer fonts that stack into full-colour stitched letters, a one-colour Solid style, and 15 harvest extras.
Shadow, Cloth, Patch A, Patch B and Stitches share every width and kerning pair, so five copies of the same text line up exactly and each takes its own colour.
The complete letter in a single style with the stitching cut out, for menus, subtitles and anywhere you just want to type and go.
Each letter is pieced from its own patches and seams, so a word looks sewn together by hand rather than stamped from one pattern.
Capitals on the uppercase keys and small capitals on the lowercase keys, so The Hollow Harvest sets as a proper title. Caps to small caps (c2sc) evens out typed capitals.
A jack-o'-lantern, crow, moon, candy corn, ghost, button, heart, needles, stitched dividers and arrows, typed like any letter and drawn in every layer.
Proportional figures by default, and tabular figures for counters, timers and scores that must not jump.
Built-in icons
Each icon is a character in the font. Click one to copy it, then paste it into anything set in Ragstitch.
Case study
Halloween games come in two moods: the ones that want to scare you and the ones that want you to carve a pumpkin. Scarecrows, ragdolls, harvest festivals and cozy horror sit in the second, and most horror fonts are built for the first: dripping, scratched or bloody.
I wanted letters that look made rather than wounded, sewn together from scraps of burlap and plaid, a little crooked and very handmade, that can still run a title screen without looking like clip art.
A patchwork letter is several fabrics, and a font only has one colour. So Ragstitch comes apart into five layer fonts: a dark Shadow at the bottom, the Cloth that makes up the whole letter, two Patch layers for the pieces sewn in from other fabrics, and the Stitches on top, with the seams, whipstitches and the running stitch round every edge.
All five share every advance width and kerning pair, so five copies of the same text stack exactly. Give each its own colour and the letters come out in full colour; swap the colours and the same title turns from harvest burlap into pumpkin, graveyard grey or a witch's brew.
Every letter is pieced together from its own patches and seams, so the A and the H in a word are cut from different scraps, and the stitched-up feel holds across a whole line instead of repeating every few letters.
For everything that doesn't need five colours there's Solid: the complete letter in one style with the stitching cut out, so the menu, the subtitle and the counters match the title without stacking anything.
The extras use the layers too: on the jack-o'-lantern the stem is Patch A and the glowing face is Patch B, and the candy corn's three bands are Cloth, Patch A and Patch B, so a stacked pumpkin comes out in full colour.
They sit on their usual Unicode code points, so you type a jack-o'-lantern or a ghost like any other character. Some of those are emoji, and a few apps always swap emoji for colour ones, so the README explains how to insert them from the glyphs panel instead.

FAQ
Type your text in Ragstitch Shadow, duplicate it four times in exactly the same position, and set the copies from bottom to top to Cloth, Patch A, Patch B and Stitches. Give each its own colour and keep size, tracking and line spacing identical. The README has four colour recipes and a web example.
No. Ragstitch Solid is the complete letter in one style, ready to use on its own for menus, subtitles and everyday titles.
Yes. Draw five text objects with the same text at the same position, one per layer, each with its own colour. The layers share every width and kerning pair, so they stay lined up in Unity, Godot, Unreal and GameMaker.
The harvest extras sit on their usual Unicode code points, and some of those are emoji. A few apps, such as chat apps and some phone keyboards, always swap them for colour emoji. Insert them from the glyphs panel in Photoshop, Illustrator, Affinity or Figma, or copy them from the README, and they show the Ragstitch drawing.
Yes. Games and apps are included with unlimited copies sold, as long as the font files are packaged inside the game rather than handed to players as installable fonts. Logos and brand identities are included with no extra fee.

A game logo has a harder job than a company logo. It has to work as a Steam capsule, an app icon, a 16-pixel favicon, a watermark on a stream and a print on a t-shirt, often in one colour. Here is what makes one survive that, and what it costs to get.
Read the articleYour interface sits on top of artwork somebody spent months on, in a scene whose colours change every second. That is a different colour problem from designing a poster, and most game palettes fail because they were built like one.
