A soft, rounded typeface for cozy games · v1.001

Marmalow

Marmalow is a soft, rounded typeface made for cozy games: farming and life sims, cafés, pet games, puzzle games and anything that should feel warm and friendly. Round ends and open shapes keep it clear in menus and dialogue, and sweet in a big title.

Features

Made for game interfaces

A soft, rounded typeface for cozy games, with 28 matching icons you can type, heart-shaped dots on i and j, and numbers that line up for scores and timers.

01

2 weights

Regular for dialogue and menus, Bold for titles, names and buttons. They are style-linked, so Bold works with the B button in any app.

02

413 characters

Upper and lowercase, numbers, punctuation, currency, arrows and fractions, with Latin-1 and Latin Extended-A for most European languages.

03

28 cozy icons

Hearts, stars, sun, moon, leaves, apples, coins, gifts, potions and more, drawn with the same soft corners as the letters and typed right next to the text.

04

Heart dots

Stylistic Set 1 swaps the dots on i and j for little hearts, for titles and names that want an extra bit of sweetness.

05

Two kinds of numbers

Proportional figures by default, because they look best in sentences, and tabular figures for scores, timers and counters that must not jump.

06

Careful kerning

About 6,000 kerning class pairs per weight, plus exceptions that keep accents from colliding, stored twice so older engines get them too.

Built-in icons

28 icons you can type

Each icon is a character in the font. Click one to copy it, then paste it into anything set in Marmalow.

How Marmalow was designed

Why I made it

Cozy games run on warmth: farming and life sims, cafés, pet games, gentle puzzles. Their type has to feel soft and friendly in the title, and then do real work everywhere else, in task lists, dialogue boxes, shop prices and inventory counts.

That second part is where most cute fonts give up. Bubbly display faces look lovely as a single word and turn into a blur in a three-line dialogue box. I wanted Marmalow to do both: sweet enough for the logo, and plain enough to read at the size of a quest log.

Round, open and still readable

Every stroke ends in a round cap, and I rebuilt the curves from exact circular arcs, so the whole family shares one soft rhythm. I kept the shapes open, too: a single-storey a that stays round in Bold, and redrawn insides on Æ, @, &, %, €, ß and friends so they don't fill in at the heavier weight.

The accents got the same care. I made them a little taller and lighter than the letters so a circumflex or a caron keeps its shape in Bold, narrower on i and j so pairs like ïî don't collide, and I drew the ogonek as a light hook so ą never reads as q.

The last pass was all about alignment. Rounded joins make letters like A, M, V, W, 1 and 4 look shorter than their neighbours, so I moved every join until its outer edge lands exactly on the cap height or the baseline.

Icons that feel like letters

I designed the 28 icons with the same soft corners as the letters, at one optical size and centred on the cap height, so they sit inside a line of text instead of floating above it. I kept the small details open, the cup's handle, the fish's eye, the gift's ribbon, so they still read in Bold.

Hearts, stars, the sun, the moon and friends also work as standard Unicode symbols. Some systems swap those for colour emoji, though, so every icon also has a Private Use code that always shows the Marmalow version. The cup only lives there, because the standard hot-drink symbol turns into an emoji almost everywhere.

How I tested it

All six font files pass the OpenType Sanitizer that Chrome and Firefox use, and Font Bakery reports no failures. I checked about 152,000 glyph pairs per weight with kerning applied, and the letters never touch.

Kerning runs to 6,213 class pairs in Regular and 5,956 in Bold, checked in HarfBuzz and with FreeType's classic kerning call for older engines. I tested the heart dots, both kinds of numbers, the Romanian comma-below letters and all 28 icons on both of their codes, and tried the web fonts in a browser with every feature switched on.

In use

01

As a game title

A farming-game title screen: Bold with a soft outline for the name, and Regular for the menu. The round ends that make the logo friendly are the same ones that keep the menu items easy to scan.

02

In the interface

A HUD, a task list, a notification, a dialogue box and a backpack, every word and icon typed in Marmalow. The hearts, coin, checkmarks and inventory items are characters from the font, coloured like text.

03

28 cozy icons

Every icon with its Private Use code. Each one matches the letters' soft corners and sits at the same size as the text around it.

04

The details

Heart dots on i and j, tabular figures that keep scores in one column, kerning on awkward pairs like AV and To, and Western and Central European accents.

05

Character set

Both weights in full: capitals, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, currency, maths signs, arrows and the accented letters of Latin-1 and Latin Extended-A.

FAQ

Before you buy

How do I turn on the heart dots?

Switch on Stylistic Set 1 (ss01), also offered as Stylistic Alternates in most design apps. On the web it's font-feature-settings: "ss01".

Why do my numbers jump around in a counter?

Numbers are proportional by default, because they look best in sentences. Switch on tabular figures (tnum, or font-variant-numeric: tabular-nums on the web) for scores, timers and counters. Engines that can't switch OpenType features on, such as Unity's TextMeshPro, use the default proportional numbers.

How do I type the icons?

Every icon has a Private Use code from U+E001 to U+E01D, which always shows the Marmalow drawing; the README lists them all, with examples for Unity, Godot and CSS. You can also copy any icon straight from the grid on this page. Hearts, stars and a few others also work as standard symbols such as ♥ and ★, but some systems show those as colour emoji.

Can I use it in a game I sell, or for its logo?

Yes. Games and apps are included with unlimited copies sold, as long as the font files are packaged inside the game rather than handed to players as installable fonts. Logos and brand identities are included too, with no extra fee.

Which languages does it support?

Most Latin-script languages, including French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, the Nordic languages, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Croatian, Slovenian, Turkish, the Baltic languages, Welsh, Irish, Catalan, Basque, Albanian, Indonesian, Malay and Swahili.
