Heavy letters armoured in dragon scales and horns · v1.000
Wyrmscale is a heavy display face wearing dragon hide: rows of overlapping scales over every letter, dark seams between the plates and curved horns along each top edge. Hide, scales, horns and glints are separate layers, so a title can be an ember-red wyrm, a frost drake or a black wyvern.
Type tester
All five layers are stacked here in the hero's ember red, with rounded scale plates and bevelled horns. Try the other dragons, switch Effects off for flat layers, or the layers off for Solid.

Features
Heavy dragon-hide letters covered in overlapping scales with bone horn spines, in layer fonts that stack in any colour, plus dragon lair extras for RPG titles.
Shadow, Hide, Scales, Spines and Shine stack into scaled, horned letters in full colour; Solid gives you the whole letter for one-colour text.
Each row of scales overlaps the one below, like real hide, and the dark seams of the Hide layer show between the plates.
Curved bone spines grow along each edge that faces the sky, from the W's arms to the tops of the lowercase.
On accented letters the horns under the accent step aside, so á, Š or ŕ keeps its mark clear without losing its spines.
Recolour hide, scales, horns and glints for an ember wyrm, a frost drake, an emerald serpent, a golden hoard or an obsidian wyvern.
A dragon egg, eye, flame, wing, fang, claw marks, gem, gold coins, horn and shield, plus two spiny dividers, typed like letters.

Case study
A dragon boss deserves a name that looks like it could bite. Most dragon fonts get there with a sharp blackletter or a flame effect, and the scales, the actual thing that makes a dragon, are left to a texture someone drops on in Photoshop.
I wanted the hide built into the letters: real scales in rows, horns that grow out of the shapes, and the whole thing recolourable in an engine, so the red wyrm and the frost drake can share one font.
Under the armour Wyrmscale is a heavy, rounded geometric letter, wide enough to carry a pattern. Over it go overlapping scale plates, each row lying over the next, with the dark hide showing in the seams between them.
Then the horns: a curved spine on every top that's open to the sky. They're why the W in the hero has three and the l has one, and why accented letters were the hard part. Under an accent the horns move aside, so the mark always has room.
The stack runs Shadow, Hide, Scales, Spines and Shine, bottom to top: a dark outline with depth, the letter and its seams, the scale plates, the bone horns, and a glint on the dome of each scale. All five share every width and kerning pair, so the copies line up exactly.
Recolour them and the same title becomes a different creature: blue scales and white horns for a frost drake, green for a serpent, gold for a hoard dragon, or grey scales with red horns for a wyvern from the dark.
The extras are the things a dragon keeps: an egg covered in its own scales, a slit-pupilled eye, a flame, a bat-like wing, a fang, three claw marks, a gem, a stack of gold coins, a ridged horn and a scaled shield. Two spiny dividers sit on the dash keys for menus and chapter cards.
They're drawn in every layer, so the egg and the shield pick up the scale texture and the horn colour of whatever dragon you've built.

FAQ
Wyrmscale comes as 6 layer fonts (Shadow, Hide, Scales, Spines, Shine, Solid) with the same spacing and kerning. Type the same text in each, stack the copies exactly on top of each other and give each its own colour. Wyrmscale Solid also works on its own in one colour.
Yes. The scale plates are drawn on the Scales layer and the dark seams come from the Hide layer underneath, so the pattern shows anywhere you can stack text, game engines included. The shading on the plates and horns in the marketing art is an extra bevel you can add in a design app.
They step aside. Under an accent the horns are left out or moved, so every accented letter keeps its scales and spines and the accent still has room.

A game logo has a harder job than a company logo. It has to work as a Steam capsule, an app icon, a 16-pixel favicon, a watermark on a stream and a print on a t-shirt, often in one colour. Here is what makes one survive that, and what it costs to get.
